將法語翻譯成英語時最基本的一點就是準確地表述出作者想要表達的意 思，讓讀者們讀你的翻譯時同讀原作一般。這就是你的任務。這意味著你要做的首先是完全地理解你要翻譯的語言還有你將翻譯過去的語言。由此你就可以看出為何 你需要對兩種語言都精通。其次，在翻譯中你需要選擇最好的、最合適的英語單詞或者句子。比如在關門closing the door(fermer或pousser)和鎖門locking the foor(fermer à clé/clé)間有很大差別。

當你翻譯文章時你需要做什么？

(a) 首先，閱讀一遍整篇文章以了解文章大意。不要擔心細節或者是應該使用的單詞。先決定需要的風格類型 – 敘事性、學術性或者是談話性的，還有時態。要同原作保持相同的時態。

(b) 寫一個草稿然后研磨細節。在檢查中，如果你遇到了一些你不知道的單詞，你必須猜測它的含義但是要明智地猜。要翻譯出含義而不是單詞。

(c) 盡量不要使用看起來與法語單詞極其相似的那一個英語單詞。使用能精確表達那個意思的簡單易懂的英語單詞。這兩種語言中有很多看起來很像但是意思卻完全不同的單詞。比如單詞clock的意思是 “une horloge”指一個大掛鐘，而小鐘表的時候則說“pendule”。在翻譯中你需要選擇最精確的那個。

單詞bibliothèque和librairie在法語中都有各自的意思。

法語中的bibliothèque(單數,陰性)相當于英語中的library，它既包括建筑也包括一個閱覽室。一個bibliothèque de prêt, de location de livres是一個借閱室。bibliothèque ambulante是一個流動閱覽室。Une bibliothèque vivante要翻譯成“A walking encyclopedia”(移動百科全書)。

法語中的librairie(單數，陰性)相當于英語中的book-shop，意為書店。

Librairie de neuf et d’occasion是一種新型的二手書店商。

(d) 還有一些法語慣用語也要轉換為同樣的英語慣用語。比如：

comme de juste – as (it) might be expected 如預期一樣

J’étais hors de moi. I was beside myself. 無法自已

Il pleut à verse – not it rains in torrents, but it is pouring with rain. 傾盆大雨

avoir quelque chose derrière la tête – to have something in the back of one’s mind. 暗地里計劃某事

trempé jusqu’aux os – not soaked to the bones, but to the skin. 全身濕透了

faire l’impossible pour réussir – not to do the impossible, but to do your utmost, to succeed. 為了成功拼勁全力

avoir faim – not to have hunger, but to be hungry 餓了

avoir peur de – not to have fear of, but to be afraid of 害怕…

huit jours – not eight days, but a week 一周

une quinzaine (of time) – not about 15, but a fortnight兩星期

d’un certain âge – not of a certain age, but middle-aged, or getting on in years. 中年的

慣用語表達法很實用且有用。有不同類型的慣用語。你可以，比如，將“諺語”也算在慣用語列表里。慣用語的難點，無論是英語還是法語，都在于句子中的所有單詞要作為一個整體翻譯，而不能單獨翻譯每一個單詞的意思。如果在英語中你被告訴“to get a glass of water and step on it”你不能逐字地進行翻譯，“step on it”意味著“hurry”（加快）。
